A bag from another era

June 6, 1944

On the morning of June 6, 1944, rough water and low clouds covered the Normandy coast.

American forces moved toward Omaha and Utah Beaches while the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions operated inland. Maps, orders, notebooks, medical supplies, and personal essentials had to remain close at hand.

Among the field equipment used during this period was the compact olive-drab M-1936 Field Bag, also known as the musette bag.

Adopted by the U.S. Army in 1936, it was originally intended for officers and mounted troops, with its use later extended to airborne and mechanized personnel.

Its divided interior and adaptable carrying system served a simple purpose:

Keep important equipment close—and carry it reliably.

War should never be romanticized. But practical designs that have survived generations deserve to be understood and remembered.

Why I decided to rebuild it

My Name Is Thomas Reynolds.

Before starting NORTHPAW, I served eight years in the United States Army as a 91B Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic and later as a 92Y Unit Supply Specialist.

My job taught me that equipment usually fails at the worst possible moment—when you are already tired, far from support, and dealing with bad weather or difficult terrain.

After leaving the Army, I found it increasingly difficult to buy bags that felt simple, substantial, and repairable. Too many were made from thin fabric, lightweight hardware, and plastic components intended for short product cycles.

From the motor pool to the workbench

A Proven Structure, Rebuilt for Today.

I found an old cast-iron walking-foot sewing machine, cleared a space in my garage, and returned to the standard I trusted.

The M-1936 Heritage Field Bag grew from that workbench. It is not an exact military reproduction or an original surplus item. It is a modern interpretation of a proven field-bag structure, rebuilt for the equipment people carry today.

A classic rebuilt

Rugged Mechanical Character.

01 · MATERIAL

16 oz Washed Cotton Canvas

Dense cotton canvas gives the bag a substantial hand-feel. It arrives naturally broken in and gradually softens, fades, and develops character through use.

02 · HARDWARE

Metal Where It Matters

Brass double-bar buckles, blackened alloy hooks, and metal snap fasteners create a direct, dependable closure system without unnecessary decoration.

03 · CARRYING

Shoulder, Crossbody or Top Handle

The adjustable widened cotton strap includes a padded section. Carry the bag over one shoulder, across the body, or by its reinforced top handle.

04 · MODERN EDC

Historic Outside. Practical Inside.

The main compartment accommodates compatible 13-inch laptops, tablets, notebooks, documents, chargers, and everyday essentials.

  • Urban commuting
  • Motorcycle riding
  • Short trips and travel
  • Camping and outdoor use
  • Photography equipment
  • Everyday carry

Made to age with use

The Wear Becomes Part of the Bag.

This bag is not intended to remain perfectly smooth and untouched.

Heavy cotton canvas records where it has been. Edges gradually soften. High-contact areas develop tonal variation. Brass and blackened metal hardware gain their own patina.

A year from now, the bag should look more like yours than it did when it left my workbench. That is exactly the point.

Built at my workbench

Nothing Leaves Until I Have Checked It.

Before a bag leaves the workshop, I inspect the stitching, pull the straps, test the closures, and check the points most likely to carry stress.

I do not send one out unless I am willing to put my own name behind it.

Thank you for supporting a veteran-owned workshop—and for giving practical, hard-wearing equipment a place in your everyday life.
